Early on in the crop informatics research and development agenda of the Generation Challenge Programme (GCP), a clearly defined need was perceived to develop a shared framework of semantics for the task of integrating GCP data across multiple data sources, applications and network sites. Out of this need arose the task of formally defining a so-called Scientific Domain Model following the paradigm of a Model Driven Architecture.
The resulting GCP semantic standards consist of two components:
- GCP "Demeter" Domain Model : an object model expressed in Unified Modeling Language
- GCP Crop Ontology : a systematic inventory of external and internally developed controlled vocabulary and ontology, used to parameterize the Domain Model.
This section of the Pantheon web site provides information on both of these components of GCP semantics. These semantics are being expressed in several "platform specific implementations" both in software and in terms of internet communication standards (i.e. GCP BioMoby data types).
